What to Feed Kids at a Birthday Party (Without the Sugar Crash)

A practical, allergy-friendly party menu that keeps energy steady, parents happy and the lolly bag from being the most exciting part.

The classic Aussie party spread - fairy bread, party pies, red cordial, lolly bags - is a sugar bomb wrapped in a sugar bomb. Here's a 2026 update that kids still love and parents actually thank you for.

Build a savoury-first platter

Lay out savoury food before sweet. Mini sandwiches (cheese, ham, vegemite), cucumber and carrot sticks with hummus, cheese cubes, popcorn, pretzels, mini quiches, sausage rolls and fruit skewers. Kids will eat what's in front of them - put the good stuff first.

The fairy bread compromise

Fairy bread is non-negotiable for many Melbourne kids. Make it - just don't make it the whole meal. One platter of fairy bread among 5 platters of savoury food is the right ratio.

Allergy-aware by default

Aim for at least one platter that's nut-free, dairy-free and gluten-free. Rice crackers, popcorn, fruit, vegetable sticks and corn chips with salsa cover almost every common allergy. Label any platter that contains nuts clearly.

Drinks: water, water, water

A jug of water with sliced lemon and strawberries on a low table is the single best change you can make. Skip the cordial entirely or offer it diluted in small cups. Juice boxes are fine but limit to one per child.

Cake timing matters

Cut the cake about three-quarters into the party (not at the end). Kids get their sugar hit while they still have time to burn it off with dancing and games - not right before pickup when they go home and bounce off the walls for two hours.

Sending food home

A slice of cake in a napkin or small box is plenty. The trend of huge "goodie boxes" with extra chocolate and lollies on top of a lolly bag is fading - and frankly, the parents picking up are quietly grateful.
