Not all party entertainers are created equal. Use this checklist to separate the seasoned pros from the weekend hustlers.
Booking a children's entertainer is an act of trust - you're inviting a stranger into your child's birthday party. These 8 questions will tell you almost everything you need to know.
1. Do you have public liability insurance and a current WWCC?
Non-negotiable. A professional entertainer in Victoria must hold a Working with Children Check and carry public liability insurance (typically $10–20 million). Ask to see both. Anyone who hesitates is the wrong booking.
2. How long have you been performing this character?
Costumes are easy to buy. The accent, the back-story, the songs, the in-character improvisation when a 4 year old asks an unexpected question - that takes years.
3. What's included in your standard package?
Get a written list. Games, music, face paint, balloons, sing-along, cake presentation - all of these can be standard or extra depending on the operator.
4. What happens if my child is shy or upset?
Listen for an answer that talks about meeting the child gently, offering a quiet welcome, and never forcing engagement. Red flag: "I just keep the energy up and they come around."
5. Can I see recent reviews and photos?
Google reviews, Facebook reviews, real photos on Instagram. A long-running Melbourne entertainer will have hundreds. Be wary of brand-new pages with only 5-star reviews and stock imagery.
6. What's your wet weather and cancellation policy?
Deposit terms should be clearly written. Reasonable policy: deposits transfer for wet weather, illness or unforeseen circumstances with 3+ days notice; deposits forfeit if you cancel inside 7 days for any reason.
7. Do you bring your own music and PA?
Yes is the only acceptable answer. You don't want to be plugging a Bluetooth speaker into a phone halfway through a party.
8. Who is my actual entertainer?
Larger agencies sometimes don't confirm the performer until the morning of. That's fine if quality is consistent - but ask. A great agency will be proud to name the performer and share their bio.
