Four seasons in one day is a meme for a reason. Here's how to plan a party that works whether the sky delivers sunshine, hail, or both.
Melbourne's weather is the single biggest variable in any outdoor party plan. Here's how the professionals handle it.
The 3-day rule
Check the BOM forecast 3 days out and make your call then. Forecasts inside that window are usually accurate. Earlier than that, plan for the worst-case season and have a Plan B already locked in.
What entertainers can and can't do outside
Most entertainers can perform outdoors in dry weather between 12°C and 32°C. Above 32°C, costumes (especially full character suits like princesses, superheroes and Minions) become a heat safety issue and the show usually moves indoors or into deep shade. Below 12°C, kids stop wanting to dance and games fall flat.
Wind is the silent killer
Wind over 25 km/h kills bubble shows, blows away balloon arches and makes face painting impossible. If your backyard is exposed, plan for an indoor pivot any time the forecast wind exceeds 20 km/h.
Backup venue options around Melbourne
Most council community halls can be booked for $80–$200 for a 3-hour slot if booked 4+ weeks ahead. Indoor play centres are another option but they often have minimum spends. The cheapest backup of all: clear a living room or rumpus, push the couches back, and let the entertainer adapt.
The deposit-and-reschedule clause
Reputable Melbourne entertainers (us included) carry deposits over for wet weather, illness or unforeseen circumstances if you give 3+ days notice. Always check this clause before paying a deposit.
