Morning sugar highs or afternoon meltdowns? Here's how to pick a party time that works with kids' rhythms - not against them.
Ask ten Melbourne parents what time to start a kids' party and you'll get ten different answers. After running thousands of parties, there are really only two windows that consistently work - and a few that almost always end in tears.
The two sweet spots: 10am–12pm and 2pm–4pm
Morning parties (10am start) catch kids at their freshest, before tiredness or hunger sets in. Afternoon parties (2pm start) work brilliantly because the under-5s have had a nap and older kids are out of their morning sport. Avoid 12pm–1:30pm starts - you collide with lunch, naps and the post-lunch grump zone.
Under-4s: morning only
For toddlers and preschoolers, a 10am or 10:30am start is almost always best. By 1pm they're cooked. Keep the party to 90 minutes max and serve a light lunch as part of the run-sheet rather than expecting kids to eat afterwards.
Ages 4–7: either window works
This age group is flexible. Pick based on your guests - if half the class plays Saturday morning sport, go 2pm. If most families have toddler siblings, go 10am so the little ones aren't dragged out at nap time.
Ages 8+: lean afternoon
Older kids love a 2pm or even 3pm start. They've had a slow morning, they're properly awake, and you can finish at 5pm with pizza and a movie if you want to extend.
Seasonal tweaks
In Melbourne summer, push outdoor parties to 9:30am or 4pm to dodge the worst of the heat. In winter, the middle of the day (11am–1pm or 1pm–3pm) maximises daylight and warmth. Never schedule a winter outdoor party after 4pm - it gets cold and dark fast.
