The classic Aussie party spread - fairy bread, party pies, red cordial, party bags - is a sugar bomb wrapped in a sugar bomb. Here's a 2026 update that kids still love and parents actually thank you for. ## Build a savoury-first platter Lay out savoury food before sweet. Mini sandwiches (cheese, ham, vegemite), cucumber and carrot sticks with hummus, cheese cubes, popcorn, pretzels, mini quiches, sausage rolls and fruit skewers. Kids will eat what's in front of them - put the good stuff first. ## The fairy bread compromise Fairy bread is non-negotiable for many Melbourne kids. Make it - just don't make it the whole meal.
